Science and Discovery During the Renaissance

Amerigo Vespucci established that the new world was a separate land mass and gave his name to the new continent. Giovanni da Verrazzano was the one who did the early hard yards in the discovery of the East Coast of North America. Galileo Galilei, amongst many other things, surprised the world by demonstrating that ice floated, and that cannon balls of different weights dropped from the leaning edge of the Tower of Pisa hit the ground at the same time. Most importantly, Galileo turned his new telescope towards the planets and stars and he was later brought before the inquisition for stating that the Earth revolved around the Sun, and forced to recant and retire. These discoveries and groundbreaking achievements would dramatically change our knowledge of the New World.
