Scaling Up: Tabletops, with Nathan Sandberg

A juicy, thick, solid-glass tabletop, counter, or shelf has tremendous functional, visual, and material appeal. Many artists and designers would like to make one, but are apprehensive due to the scale of the project. The good news is that with a firm understanding of a few basic principles and materials, the biggest hurdle becomes the size of the kiln. Gaining access to the appropriate kiln will be up to you, but in this workshop we can get you ready to design and prepare your scaled-up project for firing. Starting with small samples and concluding with a 15″ x 18″ x 1″ tabletop, you will learn everything you need to know. While support systems made of a variety of materials will be demonstrated and discussed, the focus of this workshop is the design and fabrication of the kilnglass components, not table legs and armatures. Prerequisites: Basic glass cutting skills and kilnforming experience.
