Sarah Lawrence College Poetry Festival 2016

Join us for the largest free poetry festival in New York! The Sarah Lawrence College Poetry Festival showcases work by current undergraduate and graduate students alongside established poets from all over the country.

Friday, April 15
•Regan Good
Regan Good attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa where she was a Maytag Fellow. In 2001, she received a Poetry Fellowship at the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center. Her chapbooks The Imperfect (Westown Press) and The Book of Nature (Ugly Duckling Presse) appeared in 2005 and 2009 respectively. The Atlantic House (Harry Tankoos Books, 2011) is her first book.
•Matthea Harvey
Matthea Harvey is the author of five books of poetry— If the Tabloids are True What Are You?, Of Lamb (an illustrated erasure with images by Amy Jean Porter), Modern Life (a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and a New York Times Notable Book), Sad Little Breathing Machine, and Pity the Bathtub Its Forced Embrace of the Human Form. She teaches poetry at Sarah Lawrence College.
•David Tomas Martinez
David Tomas Martinez’ debut collection of poetry, Hustle, was released in 2014 by Sarabande Books. He earned his MFA at San Diego State University, and he is currently a PhD candidate in the University of Houston’s Creative Writing program, with an emphasis in poetry. He is the reviews and interviews editor for Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts. Martinez is Visiting Assistant Professor of creative writing at Texas Tech.
Saturday, April 16
•Jennifer L. Knox (reading and craft talk)
Jennifer L. Knox’s most recent book, Days of Shame and Failure, was published by Bloof Books in 2015. Her first three books are also available on Bloof: The Mystery of the Hidden Driveway, Drunk by Noon, and A Gringo Like Me. She received her BA from the University of Iowa and her MFA in poetry writing from New York University. She currently teaches at Iowa State University.
•Kimiko Hahn
Kimiko Hahn received an undergraduate degree in English and east Asian studies from the University of Iowa, and a master’s degree in Japanese literature from Columbia University. She is the author of nine collections of poetry, including Brain Fever, Toxic Flora, The Narrow Road to the Interior, and The Unbearable Heart , which received an American Book Award. She is a Distinguished Professor in the English department at Queens College/CUNY.
•Jericho Brown
Jericho Brown earned his PhD in literature and creative writing from the University of Houston and holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of New Orleans. He is the author of two books of poetry. His most recent collection, The New Testament (Copper Canyon Press, 2014) and Please (New Issues, 2008), which won the 2009 American Book Award. He is currently an assistant professor of English and creative writing at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
•Robin Coste Lewis
Robin Coste Lewis is the author of Voyage of the Sable Venus (Knopf, 2015), winner of the National Book Award. She is a Provost’s Fellow in Poetry and Visual Studies at the University of Southern California. She is also a Cave Canem fellow and a fellow of the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities. She received her MFA in poetry from NYU, and an MTS in Sanskrit and comparative religious literature from the Divinity School at Harvard University.
•Mark Doty
Mark Doty is the author of nine books of poetry, including Deep Lane (April 2015), Fire to Fire: New and Selected Poems, which won the 2008 National Book Award, and My Alexandria. He is also the author of three memoirs: Dog Years, Firebird, and Heaven’s Coast. Doty has received two NEA fellowships, Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundation Fellowships, a Lila Wallace/Readers Digest Award, and the Witter Byner Prize.
Sunday, April 17
•Ellen Bass (reading and craft talk)
Ellen Bass’s most recent book, Like a Beggar, was published in April 2014 by Copper Canyon Press. Her previous poetry books include The Human Line, and Mules of Love, which won the Lambda Literary Award. Her nonfiction books includes Free Your Mind: The Book for Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Youth, and The Courage to Heal: A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse. She currently is teaching in the low residency MFA program at Pacific University.
•Reginald Dwayne Betts
Reginald Dwayne Betts is the author of A Question of Freedom: A Memoir of Learning, Survival, and Coming of Age in Prison (Avery/Penguin, 2009). His books of poetry are Shahid Reads His Own Palm (Alice James, 2010) and Bastards of the Reagan Era (Four Way Books, 2015). Betts is a graduate of Prince George’s Community College, the University of Maryland, the MFA Program at Warren Wilson College, and is currently a student at Yale Law School.
•Tim Seibles
Tim Seibles is the author of six books of poetry, including Body Moves (1988), Buffalo Head Solos (2004), and Fast Animal (2012), which won the Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Prize and was nominated for a National Book Award. He is a faculty member at Old Dominion University and is a teaching board member of the Muse Writers Workshop. He teaches part-time at the University of Southern Maine’s Stonecoast MFA in Writing Program and teaches at Cave Canem.
•Gary Jackson
Gary Jackson is the author of Missing You, Metropolis, which won the Cave Canem Poetry Prize. He has published other works in inscape, Literary Bohemian, Magma, Callaloo, and Tin House, among others. He received his MFA from the University of New Mexico in 2008. He’s also the recipient of both a Cave Canem and Bread Loaf fellowship. He teaches in the Department of English at the College of Charleston.
