Rutsch Award and Solo Exhibition for Painting

Pelham Art Center is thrilled to announce Lindy Chambers as the winner of the 2015 Alexander Rutsch Award and Solo Exhibition for Painting. Lindy Chambers resides in Bellville, Texas. Never seen in Westchester before, Lindy’s large oil paintings are funny, ironic, tender hallucinations of the Texas rural life that surrounds her. These distinctive paintings by Lindy Chambers depict the landscapes she travels by daily in southeast Texas. Simple buildings, mobile homes, animals, vegetation and accumulated human detritus inspire complicated compositions, cramming oodles of information and complexity of space onto the canvas.

Lindy finds patterns; in shadows on the walls, power lines in the sky, and clothes hanging on the line. She enhances them with her innovative use of electric colors of acid greens and amaranth pinks, bright lilacs and canary yellows and cerulean blues. Then by adding characters from various cartoon and film worlds to inhabit these scenes, she further transforms them into uncanny panoramas. The viewer is invited in to weave through an obstacle course of tires and telephone poles, Spanish moss and swamps, and find their way to an open chair, kiddy pool or doorway porch for a rest. Although they are barren, the spaces are not bleak. The viewer is never alone. Alligators, dogs and goats are welcoming the viewer into their Technicolor world.

This exhibition will run from May 1, 2015 – June 13, 2015 on Tuesday – Friday from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM and on Saturdays from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM.

This event is part of ARTSEE, a festival showcasing new works of art throughout Westchester County in celebration of ArtsWestchester’s 50th anniversary.
