Red Grooms: The Blue and the Gray opens October 8 at the Hudson River Museum. The Civil War, America’s story, is told by Red Grooms, who for 50 years has brought city and country life to sculpture and canvas with a truth that he inflects with compassion and humor.
The artist brings his colorful, expressionist style to these interpretations of Civil War battles and personalities from both sides of the conflict. Growing up in Tennessee, Grooms was fascinated with military history and the Civil War and delved into primary period research, such as the photographs of Mathew Brady, for imagery on which to base his portraits and battle scenes, painted on wood panels and even on the face of sliced logs. To display each work of art, Grooms collaborated with his wife Lysiane Luong Grooms, an artist and architect, to fabricate unique frames or mounts.
This exhibition will be accompanied by the scuplto-pictorama Lincoln on the Hudson, created by Red Grooms especially for this occasion, as well as Who Fought to Save the Union, Civil War material from the Museums collection.
