Patience Higgins and The Sugar Hill Quartet

Sugar Hill in Harlem was the neighborhood of choice for elegant black musicians, dapper actors, successful professionals – and those who aspired to be like them. Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins, Lena Horne, Thurgood Marshall, W.E.B. DuBois, Aaron Douglas, and many more made it their abode. So it was a logical name for Patience Higgins — who presides over the Monday night jam sessions at historic St. Nick’s Pub (Charlie Parker recorded there; Billy Strayhorn hung there when the club was known as Lucky’s Rendezvous) —to call his band. The Sugar Hill Quartet is one of the great jazz bands of modern Harlem.

If you like your jazz uptempo and overflowing with vitality, look no farther. Patience Higgins is a cooking, muscular-toned tenorman somewhere between Coleman Hawkins and Sonny Rollins — a musician great enough to have toured with Ellington, David Murray and Stevie Wonder. He really shines with a big, speedy bebop tenor sound. Ever patient, Higgins waited nearly 25 years for a recording date of his own, but it was worth it: Live in Harlem, produced by Hammiet Bluiett for Mapleshade Records, is a terrific CD.

PJS is thrilled to welcome Patience Higgins and The Sugar Hill Quartet back to our stage!
