Picturing a Lifetime of Art

Picturing a Lifetime of Art: A Retrospective of Six Decades of Painting by Hilda Green Demsky will be on exhibit at the Mamaroneck Artist Guild Gallery from October 21 to November 15, 2014. This exhibition is a survey of the lifetime paintings of Hilda Green Demsky, an artist with a multi-faceted career, a Fulbright Fellow and the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant.

After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Art and Design, she began painting pictures of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Company and exhibiting them at City Center Gallery and Lincoln Center. Thereafter, her themes have evolved from paintings of space exploration, environmental issues, to abstract interpretations of nature.

Travel has been a big influence in her outpouring of canvases, as she has received numerous art residencies, awards and fellowships from all over the world. Her outer space paintings were inspired by her invitation to witness a launch at the NASA Space Center after receiving the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship. Her exhibition at the National Gallery of Costa Rica reflected her love of painting “en plein air” on canvas and Mylar.

A resident of Larchmont, New York, Ms. Demsky has been a member of the Mamaroneck Artists Guild Gallery for forty two years. A book with more than 100 color illustrations of paintings will be available at the exhibition. An Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Gallery Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 12 noon to 5 p.m. and by appointment. Admission to the Gallery is free.

Established in 1953 by seven local artists, the Mamaroneck Artists Guild is the oldest artist cooperative maintaining its own gallery in Westchester County.
