Parampara, Classical Indian music program

Parampara, an Indian Classical Music Program will be held on Saturday, October 30 from 11AM-3PM at Yonkers Grinton Wills Library, Yonkers, NY by Satyaki Dutta in partnership with India Center of Westchester.

Performing Artists: Pt. Kinnar Seen (Sitar), Dibyarka Chatterjee(Tabla), Satyaki Dutta(Sarod), Chaitra Sreenivasiah (Carnatic Vocal), Karthik Balakrishnan(Mridangam) and a small group performance by India Center Sangeet Sanskaar Chapter.

Parampara is essentially a Sanskrit word and there is really no direct translation in English. The word Parampara means tradition of passing knowledge, art or culture from one generation to another. This has been a tradition of learning art and culture for thousands of years. Art is not all written in books, it is a style that is learnt by experience and varies from one artist to another, the knowledge is passed from Guru (Teacher) to Disciple (Shishya) and is carried on to their students and so on that keeps this style alive. Such knowledge, in whatever field it may be, is imparted through the relationship between the Guru and the disciple. The program will consist of a sequence of music highlighting respective styles and forms of the classical traditional art and culture. The Sangeet Sanskaar chapter of India Center under the guidance of Satyaki Dutta will showcase various  Ragas of various Thaats(parents scales of Hindustani Classical Music) on various instruments and its relationship with Carnatic Music.

This event is a showcase of higher and advanced levels of art and culture for students beyond India Center community, open to mainstream Americans and lovers of music and dance. The role of our Gurus and teachers is to inspire learning and practicing and eventually experience the joy of advancing to a higher skill level.

Parmpara program serves to three generations.  The older generation who are brought up in India, have lived all their time surrounded in the environment of listening, watching the depths of this traditional art and culture. The second generation who are born in India and are raising kids here. They grew up in the environment of this culture but they want their kids to connect to this beautiful art and know their roots, where they come from and appreciate and learn this art. The third generation who are born and brought up here, they did not have that exposure to this art as the other generations, they want to be connected, appreciate this art to understand their culture and tradition of their friends and family.
