Outstanding Openings with Tina Tocco (via Zoom)

Outstanding Openings
Story openings have a big job—they entice your reader to continue reading. But what’s the best way to get a reader’s attention? Dialogue? Backstory? A knock-down argument? For this workshop, bring a story opening you’re working with (alternatively, you can bring an opening you write from a prompt you’ll receive a few days before class), and get ready to revamp it—again and again—creating different effects each time. We’ll examine various story openings across genres to understand how different styles can change a piece. You’ll see how your reimagined intros can alter tone, POV, pace, and more.

Tina Tocco is a Pushcart Prize nominee. Her work has appeared in many journals, including New Ohio Review, Sou’wester, Roanoke Review, River Styx, Passages North, Potomac Review, Portland Review, and Italian Americana. Tina has also contributed to anthologies, such as The Best Small Fictions 2019 (Sonder Press, 2019) and Best Nonfiction Food (Woodhall Press, 2020). In addition to the HVWC, she has taught for Barnes & Noble, GrubStreet, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Westchester Community College, and other organizations. Tina earned her MFA from Manhattanville College, where she was editor-in-chief of Inkwell, the college’s national literary journal.
