Noonday Getaway Concert
Downtown Music’s Noonday Getaway Concert series returns on September 5th. We welcome Doug Munro and La Pompe Attack as part of the 2014 Jazz Fest.
Born into a family of Romani gypsies in 1910, Django Reinhardt invented an entirely new style of jazz guitar technique (sometimes called Gypsy Jazz) that has since become a living musical tradition within French gypsy culture. With violinist Stéphane Grappelli, he co-founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France, described by critic Thom Jurek as “one of the most original bands in the history of recorded jazz.”
In the United States the Gypsy Jazz tradition is being upheld and updated by a lively quartet called “La Pompe Attack.” On lead guitar is the two-time Grammy nominee, jazz guitar virtuoso Doug Munro. On Rhythm guitar is veteran player Ernie Pugliese. On the bass is jazz and Broadway veteran Michael Goetz. On violin is virtuoso swing king Bill Nixon. Hailing from New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, these musicians are serious about their dedication to preserving and advancing this exciting style of music. They routinely get together at one of the players houses for jam sessions to perfect their music.
La Pompe Attack plays the music of Django Reinhardt as well as Gypsy interpretations of standard jazz and popular music. They also compose and perform their own original compositions. With sold out shows being the norm, La Pompe Attack is living testimony to the public’s appetite for this lively and passionate style of music.
