Nonlinear Approaches to Structuring the Novel: a Craft Class with Zeyn Joukhadar (via Zoom)

This two-hour master craft class for both advanced and emerging writers will focus on how writers can get the form of their work to participate meaningfully in its content through non-Western and nonlinear approaches to storytelling. In this class, we will talk about the ways that we can use the structure of our novels to support the weight of the narrative and deliver it more effectively to the reader while presenting time, history, and relationships as we experience them: that is, as being braided, intertwined, collective, asynchronous, and/or polyphonic. We will also touch on the ways that the structure of the modern novel has been influenced by structures of power that seek to discredit the stories of marginalized, oppressed, and colonized peoples by discrediting storytelling modes that are rooted in collectivity, polyvocality, multiplicity, and nonlinear concepts of time, and the ways that telling stories in these modes can challenge the unseen “eye”/“I” of power.

NB: This is a craft class and not a workshop. It is capped at 20 students. It will take place via Zoom. Zoom link instructions will be emailed at the time of registration and again the day of the class. Please check spam filter and email admin@writerscenter.org with questions. Please note: Scholarship information for this class will be available in May. Please read our course policies page before registering for any HVWC class and please see our scholarship page for details on how to apply for a need-based or person of color scholarship.
