Crossing Borders in Performance IV: Francis Mateo

Dominican American poet, actor and writer Francis Mateo performs from his recent work, with keyboard, bass and percussion accompaniment, following dialog with exhibiting Dominican print artist, Pepe Coronado.

An evening program that explores themes of memory and heritage among Dominican immigrants to New York, but also the reality of those who have made the City and region their homes for a long time. Exhibiting artist and print maker Pepe Coronado uses the graphics of maps to represent national identities embedded in new contacts, while also informing viewers of the complex interplay of the United States and the Dominican Republic in history, particularly during the periods of US occupation and intervention in the 1920s and mid ‘60s.  While Francis Mateo writes and performs poetry, he writes: “I explore themes of nostalgia through poetry and music because it makes the performance more alive and interactive.  These musicians ground their music in Dominican rhythms.  I’m in search of something that’s alive and present.”

Francis Mateo moved to New York City from his native Dominican Republic at the age of 17. After earning a Bachelor in English Literature from Hunter College (CUNY) he went on to earn an MFA from the graduate acting program at Brooklyn College.  Francis has acted in off-Broadway and off-off Broadway productions with the Public Theater, including the Shakespeare in the Park production of Berthold Brecht’s Mother Courage, (starring Meryl Streep), as well as the Classical Theater of Harlem (starring Andre DeShields, the Shakespeare Forum, Mabou Mines. Film works with directors such as Melvin Van Peebles, and Spike Lee.  He also acts in television commercials and does voiceovers.  Francis’ poetry and short stories have been published in Argentina, Germany, and the Dominican Republic.  His book of poetry Ubre Urbe can be found on Amazon.com.

Espanol:   Un programa vespertino que explora temas de la memoria y herencia de los inmigrantes dominicanos en Nueva York, pero también la realidad de los que han hecho de la ciudad y región sus hogares durante mucho tiempo. La exhibición del artista de grabados y de la impresión, Pepe Coronado, utiliza los gráficos de mapas para representar identidades nacionales incorporadas en los nuevos contactos, a la vez que informa a los espectadores sobre la compleja interacción de los Estados Unidos y la República Dominicana en la historia, particularmente durante los períodos de ocupación de Estados Unidos y la intervención en la década de 1920 y mediados de los años 60. Mientras Francis Mateo escribe y recita poesía, el escribe: “exploro temas de la nostalgia a través de la poesía y la música, porque esto hace que la presentación sea más viva e interactiva. Estos músicos ofrecen sus interpretaciones en ritmos dominicanos. Estoy en busca de algo que esté vivo y presente”.

 Francis Mateo se trasladó a la ciudad de Nueva York,  desde su natal República Dominicana, a la edad de 17 años. Pepe Coronado nació y creció en la República Dominicana, actualmente reside en Nueva York. Especialista en grabado, Coronado fué grabador principal de Pyramid Atlantic en Silver Spring, Maryland; el Hand Print Workshop International en Alexandria, Virginia y el Serie Print Project en Austin, Texas. Ha sido artista visitante

en Self Help Graphics en Los Angeles, California y actualmente en el Hudson River Museum en New York. Coronado ha enseñado grabado y artes digitales en el Corcoran College of Art, Georgetown University, y en el Maryland Institute College of Art en Baltimore donde obtuvo su Maestría en Bellas Artes (MFA).

Las más recientes exhibiciones individuales de Coronado incluyen “Construcciones/Obstrucciones 2005 – 2010”, Centro para las Artes Digitales, del Westchester Community College, New York; “Obstrucciones” Galería 101, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.; Amos Eno Gallery, Brooklyn, New York. Entre sus exhibiciones colectivas están: “History and Memory” (Historia y Recuerdo), como parte de la Bienal de Arte Latinoamericano del Bronx, Gordon Parks Gallery, Bronx, New York; “Art & Social Change/Land, Culture & Memory”, Centro Internacional de Belén, Palestina; “Centers and Borders: Artwork from the United States”, Universidad Ningxia, Yichuan, China; “New Legacies and Living Icons”, James Backas Gallery, Baltimore, Maryland; y “Directions: DC Contemporary Latino Art”, Frida Kahlo Gallery, Cultural Institute of Mexico, Washington, D.C. Actualmente participa en la exhibición “El Cambio” en el Banco Mundial, Washington, DC.

Su trabajo se encuentra en varias colecciones como son las del Rutgers Archives for Printmaking Studios, Georgetown University, Lauinger Memorial Library of Rare Books and Prints Collection, en The Library of Congress, Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation, Federal Reserve Board of Governors Art Collection, del District of Columbia Government: Arts and Humanities Commission, El Paso Museum of Art y del Mexic-Arte Museum.
