Managing Narrative Distance: A Prose Workshop with Allison Wyss (via Zoom)

Think of how a camera zooms. Writing does that too. Sometimes we’re far away, sometimes we get a close up of a face. Sometimes it’s–ooh, this is specific to writing–all the way inside a character’s brain. I’m talking about narrative distance–and how to manage it.

We’ll look at sample texts (by writers such as Rumaan Alam, James Baldwin, Leesa Cross-Smith, Roxane Gay, and Ruth Ozeki) that zoom, studying how different distances are achieved and they effects have on the story. Then through prompts and exercises, we’ll engage with different types of point of view, voice, time, tense, and perspective, putting what we’ve learned to practical use.

NB: This class will be taught on zoom and capped at 15 people. Please refer to the course policies page and the scholarship page before registering for any class at HVWC. Scholarship information will be available in April and applications are due on May 15th.

Registration for this 4hour intensive class is $124 at:
