Mamaroneck Historical Murals

Mamaroneck, NY. April 3, 2019: This year, celebrate a Spring Break with Art in Mamaroneck Village!

From April 10 to 20, the Mamaroneck Historical Murals will be launched throughout the Village of Mamaroneck. Street artists from around the world will create six spectacular wall paintings that pay tribute to the rich history of the Village. The Historical Murals Project is sponsored by the Mamaroneck Historical Society, Village of Mamaroneck Arts Council, and Street Art for Mankind, the Larchmont-based nonprofit organization producing the project.

“This will be an incredible artistic and community experience,” promises Audrey Decker, a co-founder of Street Art for Mankind. “It offers people of all ages the chance to see artists imaginatively interpret our foundational stories and celebrate our values.”

Residents and visitors are invited to meet the artists, watch the murals take shape, and participate in special activities during Spring Break. The week-long program culminates in an inaugural Art Walk and festivities on Saturday afternoon, April 20, starting at 1:00p.m.

Events, including a film series (sponsored by the Mamaroneck Public Library), a spray paint workshop (co-sponsored by the Village of Mamaroneck Recreation Department), and meet-the-author sessions, are free and open to all.

The Mamaroneck Historical Murals will portray key cultural and historical themes such as diversity, the importance of the Harbor, the Skirmish on Heathcote Hill, the iconic Skinny House, and our Native American heritage, noted John Pritts, Village Historian and co- president of the Mamaroneck Historical Society. “We should all know our history, which shaped the character of our Friendly Village and made us who we are.”

The muralists–Victor Ash, Mr Cenz, Shalak Attack, Bruno Smoky, Loic Ercolessi, and Frank Parga–hail from Europe, the UK, South America, Canada, and Westchester. Four of the five international artists will have just completed a set of heroic-scale murals in Manhattan for the International Labor Organization.

While visiting the murals, viewers may download a unique interactive free app, “Behind the Wall,” to learn more about the artists and the history portrayed.

The Mamaroneck Historical Murals are funded by local businesses and individuals, Mamaroneck Historical Society, and the Village of Mamaroneck Arts Council. Former Village Trustee Leon Potok serves as program facilitator.
