Lyndhurst Mansion Tours

Lyndhurst’s restored grand Picture Gallery reopens to the public.  The grand picture gallery features a fine collection of paintings purchased by railroad baron Jay Gould in the 1880s and is a rare survivor of America’s gilded age. The collection has been in situ since Gould purchased the works from noted dealers Goupil and Knoedler. Conservators from the Metropolitan Museum have cleaned the works and noted frame restorer Eli Wilner has repaired period frames and rehung the gallery.  The walls and moldings have been repaired and in places, the original painting treatment from 1838-42 has been revealed. Many
works that have not previously been on view have been taken out of storage.

The collection includes extremely fine examples of European 19th century academic painting by such artists as Courbet, Corot, Bouguereau, Gerome, Rousseau, Daugbigny, Troyon and Meissonier and is the best collection of its kind in Westchester County. Additional paintings were added to the collection by Gould’s daughters, Helen and Anna, the Duchess of Talleyrand. For those fans of Downton Abbey, this is the place to experience country house living without travelling to England. The gallery may be viewed as part of Lyndhurst’s regularly scheduled mansion tours.
