Walk through a moment in Westchester’s history. In a newly fabricated scuplto-pictorama by artist Red Grooms, the Museum presents Lincoln on the Hudson, opening October 8, 2016.
Inspired by Abraham Lincoln’s sojourn in Peekskill, Lincoln on the Hudson, captures a moment in Westchester’s history. A stage set, filled with figures transforms the Museums middle level into Peekskill’s waterfront with the artist’s unique re-imagining of this historical scene on the eve of the Civil War. During a ten-day journey from Springfield, Illinois, to Washington D.C. for his inauguration in 1861, President Lincoln made stops in several major cities along the route, and paused in Westchester before entering New York. Larger than life, Lincoln arrives at the back of his train, greeted by a multitude of excited admirers – a colorful array of local citizens, children, railroad workers, a brass band and militia volunteers.
This exhibition will be accompanied by Red Grooms: The Blue and the Gray, featuring portraits and Civil War scenes by the artist, as well as Who Fought to Save the Union, Civil War material from the Museums collection.
