L’Imperatore di Capri

Until the 19th Century, Capri did not exist in the minds and dreams of travelers. Its enchanting and sensuous beauty, its incomparable marriage of the sea and the sun, and its illustrious historical legacy were known only to the locals. It was then – principally due to the magnetic allure of its otherworldly Grotta Azzurra – that the foreign Grand Tour visitors began to arrive en masse. Relive the beauties of these places through the scenes and scenery from L’Imperatore di Capri, a popular, hilarious, masterpiece of Italian cinema featuring the great Antonio DeCurtis, better known as Totó. Sonia, a beautiful gold digger, mistakes Antonio (Toto), a waiter in a Neapolitan hotel, for the Arab prince Bey of Agapur and makes an appointment with him for the following day in Capri. Antonio goes behind his wife and mother in law’s back. Due to a lucky series of circumstances he really does becomes the prince of the island. Directed by Luigi Comencini | 1949 | 98 min. | In Italian with English subtitles.
