“Lift Ev’ry Voice”

“Lift Ev’ry Voice,” featuring works by Anton Modern Art and Fani Miller-Beard, will be on exhibit at New Rochelle Council on the Arts Rotunda Gallery at City Hall from February 6th through March 16th. The artists’ reception will be held at 5 pm on February 13th. The exhibit title is derived from the Black National Anthem of the same name composed by J. Rosamond Johnson with lyrics by his brother, James Weldon Johnson, both important figures in African American history.

Anton Modern Art says his creative practices “are inspired by historical figures that stood strong, face-to-face with adversities, fighting against all odds such as: Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner, Paul Robeson, James Baldwin, Angela Davis, Nina Simone, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Jacob Lawrence, The Black Panthers, Ali, M.L. King, Malcolm X, Toussaint L’Ouverture, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa and so many others that activated and lifted their voices through either the power of Music, Writing, Acting, Painting, Leadership and or Activism.”

Fani Miller-Beard is a self-taught mixed media collage artist.  “I use wood, plastic, fabric, metal, sand, paint, shells, beads, and pretty much anything that comes to mind that can be attached to the art piece,” she says. “Inspiration comes as the work progresses and can result from a recent trip overseas, a current event in the news, everyday interactions with others, ancestral heritage, and holidays.  A strong ancestral influence is depicted in the creation of most of my mixed media collages.  The theme of this exhibit, “Lift Ev’ry Voice” invokes many thoughts of those who preceded us to this country, including my ancestors.  I find a never-ending supply of creativity when I work on art based on that situation.”
