Life and Nature – The Best of Czech Music: Hoff-Barthelson Music School’s Festival Orchestra Winter Concert features works by Smetana, Martinů and Dvořák

Oboist Gerard Reuter to perform with Orchestra

The Hoff-Barthelson Music School Festival Orchestra performs its winter concert “Life and Nature – The Best of Czech Music,” on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at 7:00 p.m., at the Community Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 468 Rosedale Avenue, White Plains, NY. Oboist Gerard Reuter will be the Orchestra’s guest artist.

Jun Nakabayashi, Music Director for the Festival Orchestra, will conduct a program of Bedřich Smetana’s symphonic poem The Moldau; Bohuslav Martinů’s Oboe Concerto H.353, featuring Mr. Reuter; and In Nature’s Realm, Op. 91 (Nature) and the Carnival Overture, Op. 92 (Life), two concert overtures from Antonín Dvořák’s, trilogy of overtures Nature, Life and Love.

There is a suggested admission of $18 for adults. Students may attend free of charge.

About Gerard Reuter, oboe
A recipient of the prestigious Pro Musicis International Award, oboist Gerard Reuter has enjoyed a distinguished solo career, touring the United States, Europe, Asia, India and Africa. He has participated as a featured guest artist at many prestigious summer festivals including Caramoor, Marlboro, the Chamber Music Festival of the Library of Congress and La Jolla in the United States, and the Flanders Festival, the Dartington Festival and the International Musicians’ Seminar at Prussia Cove in Europe. As a soloist, he has appeared with numerous orchestras including the Jupiter Symphony, Philharmonia Virtuosi, the National Chamber Orchestra, the Soviet Émigré Orchestra and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, of which he was a founding member.

A dedicated chamber music performer, he is a member of the Dorian Wind Quintet and was a founding member of the ensemble, An die Musik. As a guest, he has performed with many ensembles, including New York Philomusica, Fry Street String Quartet, Colorado String Quartet, Weilerstein Piano Trio, Composers String Quartet, DaVinci String Quartet and the Aspen Wind Quintet.

Gerard Reuter has been heard on major radio stations throughout this country and in Europe and has been recorded in concert for worldwide broadcast on The Voice of America. He has recorded for Sony, New World, Telarc, Columbia, BMG-Catalyst, Dorian, Summit and Musical Heritage Society.

About the Festival Orchestra:
The Festival Orchestra is a full symphony orchestra reserved for high school students at the highest level of technical ability and musical artistry. Lauded as one of the finest high school orchestras in the United States by the New York State Council on the Arts, the Festival Orchestra was selected by the New York Philharmonic as a partner in its new Philharmonic Academy Jr. Program in 2014. Hoff-Barthelson is the only music school in Westchester County and the tristate area to hold this honor. Students in the Festival Orchestra benefit from this special partnership through coachings by Philharmonic members and special access to rehearsals and events.

About Jun Nakabayashi:
Music Director Jun Nakabayashi is the dynamic director of the Hoff-Barthelson Festival Orchestra and the well-regarded Taconic Opera. Active in symphonic and operatic music for over twenty-five years, he has conducted the Bay Shore Lyric Opera, the South Bay Chamber Ensemble, Vox Artis Zenei Festival 2002 in Hungary, and the Alea II Contemporary Music Ensemble. He is committed to his work with young musicians, and has taught and conducted at the Bay Area Summer Opera Theatre Institute at San Jose State University.
