L’HISTOIRE DU SOLDAT at The Emelin Theatre

emelin_lhistoiredusoldat_581wL’Histoire du Soldat, (A Soldier’s Tale) was conceived by Igor Stravinsky and Swiss writer, C.F. Ramuz in 1918. Stravinsky proclaimed it a piece “to be read, played and danced” “(lue, jouee et dansee”) by three actors, a dancer and a septet of instruments. A morality play based on various Russian folk tales, the result is a theatrical piece of art which embraces an eclectic array of musical styles ranging from American jazz and  ragtime to a Viennese waltz, to a South American tango. The music is quite angular, rhythmic, filled with changing time signatures yet delightful.

This production is brilliantly narrated and acted by the incredible English baritone Benjamin Luxon. Luxon is one of Great Britain’s major international singers. His career of some 30 years displays an unusual versatility and he is equally renowned as recitalist, concert, and opera singer. The versatile Luxon will play all three speaking parts, including the narrator, Joseph (the soldier) and the devil. Lindsey Catherine Jones, the lone dancer with infinite grace, has a BFA from SUNY Purchase and is currently dancing with Dance Heginbotham, Pam Tanowitz, and GREYZONE. They are accompanied by a septet of world class musicians who are members of the NY Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, Orpheus and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

L’Histoire is usually performed with a conductor, but this performance is performed as a chamber work without a conductor.
