It’s All About the Base and the Face:

Friday-Monday, August 28-31, 10 – 5

HANDS ON

In this 4 day workshop Kelsey Duncan will guide students through simple strategies to achieve a better intuitive and technical understanding of sculpting the human figure in clay. Utilizing supplied visual resources; each student will sculpt a ¾ life-size human torso with special attention paid to the anatomy of the face and hands. Participants will learn a simple slab and cylinder construction method to achieve a dynamic, realistic figure without the hassle of a complicated armature. Depending on the individual skill levels and interest, students will be taught various methods of stylization, content development, use of found objects and a range of ceramic and cold finishing techniques. These include: slips and engobes, underglaze image transfers and gold leaf application.

About the Artist:

Originally from Southeast Idaho, Kelsey Duncan received his Bachelors of Fine Art from the University of Montana. His work has been shown nationally in group and solo exhibitions throughout the Western United States and on the East Coast. These include the Fourth Annual “Beyond the Brickyard Juried Exhibition” at the Archie Bray Foundation and the “2010 College Clay Collective; Best in College Ceramics at Genesee Pottery.” Preceding his undergraduate studies he was an instructor at the Teton Field Institute in Alta, Wyoming. Utilizing an art-based curriculum, Kelsey taught the local children how to contribute to the preservation of their alpine surroundings through more sustainable living practices. Following his education he built a studio at his home in Missoula, Montana where he worked full time as a studio artist. Drawing heavily from his social and geological surroundings for content, he found a well of inspiration living and working in the Northwest. In the fall of 2012 Kelsey moved to Port Chester to be an Artist in Residence at the Clay Art Center where stayed for 2 years. He feels incredibly fortunate to have been a part of the Clay Art Center family, working along side a multitude of professionals relentlessly dedicated to clay and community. Kelsey is presently pursuing his MFA at the Ohio University in Athens Ohio.
