John Hall and Laurel Masse’s Songs and Stories

Two friends and residents of the Hudson Valley region John Hall and Laurel Massé will be performing at the Schoolhouse Theater &Arts Center in North Salem on October 7 at 8 pm.  Tickets are $30.

Both of John and Laurel met at the beginning of their careers at the Mercer Arts Center; each in bands auditioning for a record deal—John in Orleans and Laurel in The Manhattan Transfer. The two re-connected this past June for a benefit in Hudson.

John Hall, best known as the founder of the band Orleans, with hits including “Still The One,” and “Dance With Me.” John co-wrote Janis Joplin’s “Half Moon,” Steve Wariner’s #1 country hit “You Can Dream of Me,” and also “Power,” which became the theme of the NO NUKES concerts in 1979 and was recorded by the Doobie Brothers with James Taylor and Michael McDonald, Holly Near, Pete Seeger and Peter, Paul and Mary. His environmental concerns led him into community activism, which got him into politics, first serving in the Ulster County, New York legislature, then as trustee and president of the Saugerties school board.  Hall won a seat in Congress in 2006, and returned to music in 2011 with Orleans.  John loves meeting people at his concerts, and looks forward to sharing words & music, including optimistic stories from his memoir of life, music and politics: STILL THE ONE: A ROCK’n’ROLL JOURNEY TO CONGRESS AND BACK.

LAUREL MASSE´

Laurel Massé’s repertoire embraces Basie and Bach, banjos and bagpipes, the Beatles and William Shakespeare— the Bard of Avon. A singer without borders. her most recent recording, Once in a Million Moons is a classic partnership with arranger/accompanist Hubert “Tex” Arnold, long-time music director for the great Margaret Whiting. Ms. Massé has also appeared on recordings by Barry Manilow, percussionist Layne Redmond, songwriter Carol Hall, and banjo master Tony Trischka, among others. While living in NYC, she was a member of the professional choir of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. . Laurel Massé began her career as a founding member of The Manhattan Transfer with hits “Operator” and “Chanson D’Amour,” and as a solo artist the Billboard jazz-charting albums.
