Jerrilynn Dodds – Paintings of the Hudson River School: Art, Americans, and Disappearing Nature in the 19th Century

The Hudson River School was composed of a group of New York City artists who were deeply concerned with America’s unique natural heritage. Their beautiful paintings of natural settings, which range from extremely realistic depictions of vast landscapes to dramatic luminous romanticized visions, helped to link American identity to the land and to chronicle the changing American landscape.

Jerrilynn Dodds is dean of the College at Sarah Lawrence, where she is also a member of the art history faculty. She is a lecturer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Part of a lecture series on the art, culture, and ecology of the Hudson River, sponsored by the Board of Directors of the Hudson River Valley Environmental Education Institute and the Sarah Lawrence College Center for the Urban River at Beczak, www.centerfortheurbanriver.org.
