Italian Art & Artists: Modigliani
Amedeo Clemente Modigliani was an Italian artist who worked mainly in France. Primarily a figurative artist, he became known for paintings and sculptures in a modern style characterized by mask-like faces and elongation of form. His style used in painting landscapes is similar to that of Marc Chagall, but, a master at depicting the female body, his surreal nudes and portraits earned him the widest acclaim. He became the epitome of the tragic artist, creating a posthumous legend almost as well-known as that of Vincent Van Gogh.
