Illuminating the Line: an Introduction to Prose Poetry with Philip F. Clark via Zoom

This class will be taught online using Zoom. Login instructions will be emailed on the day before the workshop. Please check spam/promotions filters or email admin@writerscenter.org with questions.

Prose poems have often been seen in the past as the ‘orphans of verse’; striding two genres, however, they are really the twins of prose and poetry. Prose poetry has increased both in practice and acclaim, and it has a rich history of work by such poets as Gertrude Stein, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jean Toomer, Czeslaw Milosz, Mary Rufle, Mark Strand, John Ashbury, and Richard Blanco, among many others.  Rather than just lines that are a box of text, the prose poem is distinct and yet mercurial; it reaches out of the ‘box’, with an energy that is unique, and it illumines what a line, text, poetry, and prose can be when it combines these things in a new form. We’ll discuss the various ways that a prose poem is defined, as well as redefined, and open up new ways that it extends and reinvigorates such definitions. Each workshop attendee will write 4-6 prose poems, to share and discuss. At the close of the workshop, I will provide potential professional online and print venues for you to submit your work for possible publication. All levels of experience are welcome.
