Hudson Valley Music Club November Professional Concert

On Monday, November 23, at 1:00 PM, the Hudson Valley Music Club will present a concert by the Momenta Quartet with Samuel Rhodes, viola. The concert will feature Mendelssohn’s Viola Quintet No. 2, Op. 87 in B-flat Major, and several works by award-winning composer Eric Nathan. These will include his string quartet “Multitude, Solitude”, “Omaggio a Gesualdo” for viola quintet, and a viola quintet arrangement of Gesualdo’s madrigal “Ahi, Disperata Vita”. The Momenta Quartet has performed for the Music Club in the past and we are very pleased to welcome them again.

The Momenta Quartet’s mission is to bring the best of contemporary music to audiences in New York City and around the world. Their vision of new music embraces composers from all cultures and from diverse musical backgrounds, including jazz and avant-garde improvisation. Momenta devotes the vast majority of its programming to living composers, many of whom are emerging or underrepresented in the New York new music scene. They give multiple performances of their works on innovative concert programs that may include 20th/21st century masterworks and selected great music from the past.
Praised by the New York Times for its “focused, fluid performance” and by Sequenza 21 for its “fire, fantasy and absolute musical commitment,” the Momenta Quartet has premiered over 50 works in the past eight years and has collaborated with over 80 living composers. Now in its ninth year in residence at Temple University, Momenta has also performed and lectured at Cornell, Columbia, Yeshiva and Hawaii Pacific Universities; Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore and Haverford Colleges; The Mannes School of Music and the Boston Conservatory; among others. The quartet has performed in England, Singapore and Indonesia and has received grants from the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, Meet the Composer, the Aaron Copland Fund, the Brooklyn Arts Council and the New York State Council on the Arts.

Samuel Rhodes has had an illustrious career as a viola soloist, ensemble member and educator. He has appeared as soloist with orchestras in Oregon, New Jersey, and New York. He has been featured artist several times in Music From Marlboro series at Town Hall and on tour throughout the Eastern United States and Canada. For more than 40 years he was a member of the Juilliard String Quartet, and has been chair of the viola department at Juilliard since 2002.
