Hudson Valley Music Club Annual Student Awards Concert


The Hudson Valley Music Club holds an annual competition for talented Westchester County high school students. The winners are invited to display their talents at a concert in April.

The winners of this year’s competition are, in alphabetical order:

Minori Aoki, pianist, a 10th grader at Rye H.S., started playing at the age of 4, and moved to the U.S. from Japan about 4 years ago. Since then, Mrs. Rie Matsumoto has been her instructor. Minori received Honorable Mention in Piano Teacher Congress of New York in 2014 and First Prize in the following year. She also received the Gold Prize in Young Pianist Competition of New Jersey, and participated in NYSSMA All-State piano showcase in 2014 and 2015. She received First Prize in the VIVO International Music Competition of 2015.

Anabelle Johnston, pianist, is a freshman at Horace Greeley High School and has studied piano for 7 years. She is currently enrolled at Manhattan School of Music Precollege in Harlem, NY, where she studies with Delana Thomsen. She has played in many chamber groups at MSM as well as participating in the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Piano Concerto Competition. In the past she has studied at Hoff Barthelson Music School and entered in numerous Associated Music Teacher League competitions and played in the 2014 Winter Musicales. She was in the Hoff Barthelson Honors Program for 2 years and played many master classes at the school. Beyond piano, Anabelle plays the flute in the Horace Greeley High School Band and is a well-rounded student with a passion for all different kinds of music.
Taz Kim, cellist, is a 9th grader at New Rochelle H.S., and has been studying, with David Krieger for the past 5 years. He has been in the GWYOA Elementary and Junior String Orchestras for 6 years and is the principal cellist in the Junior Strings for the 2015-2016-concert year. He has participated in the All-County orchestras of Westchester as well. For the past 2 years He has participated in the Summit Music Festival held in Manhattanville College. He has been able to participate in master classes from cellists such as Jeffrey Solow, Jesus Castro-Balbi, Arkady Orlovsky, Fred Herry, and Lynn Harrell. He recently participated in The KRB New York International Music Competition and received the second place prize along with the honor of performing at the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall. He also volunteers in a special program where he teaches cello to underprivileged children on a weekly basis.

Aoi Yazawa, pianist, is a junior at Keio Academy of New York in Purchase, NY. Aoi started her piano studies in Japan when she was three years old. She was an Honor Class student at Toho Music School for Young Children in Tokyo Japan, and she has participated and has been awarded prizes in various competitions in Tokyo, including The Student Music Competition of Japan, The Japan Classical Competition, The PTNA Piano Competition. Upon attending Keio Academy of New York in 2014, she started taking piano lessons from Katsura Tanikawa at Hoff-Barthelson Music School where she is part of the Honors program. In 2015, Aoi was selected to participate in the Young Artist Summer Program of The Curtis Institute of Music. Aoi recently took part in a Master Class series at Hoff-Barthelson, playing for Meng-Chieh Liu, Director of The Curtis Institute of Music , Roosevelt University, and the New England Conservatory.
