Hoff-Barthelson Music School HB Artist Series presents Donna Elaine, flute

A program of Romantic and Contemporary works for flute with Tomoko Uchino, piano and Joseph Piscitelli, flute

Flutist Donna Elaine is the featured artist for the 2015-2016 Hoff-Barthelson Music School HB Artist Series on Sunday, April 17, 2016, at 5:00 p.m., at the Greenville Community Church, 270 Ardsley Road, Scarsdale. Miss Elaine will be joined by fellow Hoff-Barthelson faculty members Tomoko Uchino, piano and Joseph Piscitelli, flute.

Included on the program are Carl Krüger’s Suite in 3 Sätzen; Yuko Uebayashi’s Au-delà du Temps pour deux flûtes et piano; Carl Reinecke’s Ballade, Op. 288; and Deviations on The Carnival of Venice, Mike Mower’s delightful and exciting new set of 10 variations in different styles – jazz, waltz, rock, salsa, swing – on the famous theme.

About the Program:
The flute repertoire is curiously deprived of Romantic flute music. Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Berlioz, Wagner, Verdi, Dvorak – not one of these composers wrote works for the flute. Miss Elaine’s recital focuses on works from and written in the style of the Romantic period.

3 Sätzen, an out-of-print work for flute and piano by Carl Krüger, a gifted composer from a north German family of professional musicians, has been reprinted by the publisher for this performance. Although Yuko Uebayashi’s, Au-delà du Temps for two flutes was written in 2008, it nonetheless exploits the “Romantic” style, albeit with a contemporary harmonic vocabulary. The Ballade by Carl Reinecke is often over-shadowed by his more well-known Undine Sonata. Miss Elaine is pleased to give this work its deserved due. The Carnival of Venice theme, a popular folk tune, is often used in Romantic era theme and variations. Here, however, the sugar and spice palate of previous offerings is cleansed by the acerbic wit of Mike Mower.

Admission to the recital is $18, $15 for seniors (65+) and free of charge to HBMS students and students 18 years of age and younger. Tickets to a series of three recitals are available at a reduced rate. Tickets can be ordered any time by calling 914-723-1169 or emailing hb@hbms.org and are available for purchase at the door. Program subject to change.

About Donna Elaine:
In addition to serving as principal flute in the New Choral Society Orchestra and managing a busy teaching schedule throughout the New York area, Donna Elaine is a gifted recitalist whose performances appeal to both professional musicians and newcomers to the recital medium. Not only is Miss Elaine committed to uncovering little known treasures in the repertoire, including virtuoso pieces for piccolo (even turn-of-the-century works for D-flat piccolo!), her recitals also include illuminating commentary, as well as such entertaining touches as multi-media performances with other artists. For example, in her repertoire Miss Elaine performs a Divertissement by Kuhlau which is aurally pristine, but visually enhanced with a slide presentation of a cartoon melodrama.

A native Californian, Miss Elaine moved to New York in 1978. She received Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees in Flute Performance from Chapman College in Orange, California, where she was a student of Louise DiTullio and Arthur Hoberman. She also received Certificates of Honor from the Académie Internationale d’Eté in Nice, France, where she studied with Jean Pierre Rampal, Maxence Larrieu, Alain Marion and Andras Adorjan. Since relocating to New York, Miss Elaine has studied with Julius Baker, Judith Mendenhall and Robert Stallman.

In 1991 Miss Elaine premiered a work on the Newly Published Music concert at the National Flute Association Convention in Washington, D.C. In 1999 she was again selected to premiere a newly published work and to teach for the Pedagogy Forum at the National Flute Association Convention in Atlanta, Georgia.

Miss Elaine is on the faculty at The Hackley School and at Hoff-Barthelson Music School where she teaches recorder, Suzuki flute, flute, piccolo, chamber music, choir chimes and serves as Chamber Music Program Co-Director. Miss Elaine also plays with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, the Yonkers Philharmonic and the Yonkers Pops Band.
