Hoff-Barthelson Music School HB Artist Series presents Adam Grabois, cello

An Evening of Beethoven and Prokofiev

Adam Grabois, cello, performing a recital of works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Sergei Prokofiev, is the featured artist for the 2015-2016 Hoff-Barthelson Music School HB Artist Series on Friday, November 6, 2015, at 8:00 p.m., at the Greenville Community Church, 270 Ardsley Road, Scarsdale.

Joined by fellow faculty member Katsura Tanikawa, piano, the evening’s program includes Beethoven’s Seven Variations on “Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen” from Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflӧte and Beethoven’s Sonata in C Major, Opus 102, No. 1. The performance concludes with Prokofiev’s poignant and expressive Sonata in C Major, Opus 119.

Admission to the recital is $18, $15 for seniors (65+) and free of charge to HBMS students and students 18 years of age and younger. Tickets to a series of three or ten recitals are available at a reduced rate. About Adam Grabois:
Adam Grabois has a varied career as chamber musician, soloist, teacher and recording artist and is the founder of the record label Reflex Editions, about whose first recording The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote, “Sometimes, the way he plays with the sound of a single note has enough emotional sustenance in it to launch a half-dozen distinct feelings in quick succession.” A second disc, with violinist Deborah Wong, DUOS: Martinů, Ravel, Kodaly, was subsequently released to critical acclaim. He is the cellist of the New York Chamber Soloists with whom he performs throughout the country. Recent appearances include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Morgan Library, the National Gallery, the Getty Center, the Kravis Center and colleges and universities nationwide. He has collaborated with Menahem Pressler, Rachel Barton Pine, Mikhail Baryshnikov and many others. Mr. Grabois was educated at Swarthmore College and studied with David Finckel. He is on the faculty of Kinhaven Music School, where he teaches cello, chamber music, performs and acts as the director of the newly launched Young Artist Seminar. In addition to teaching at Hoff-Barthelson Music School, he maintains a full studio at the Weston Music Center in Connecticut. His cello was made by Samuel Zygmuntowicz in Brooklyn, NY (1998) and his bows were made by Ole Kanestrøm (2004 and 2008).

About Katsura Tanikawa
Hailed by many critics as a “vibrant” and “thoughtful” musician, Katsura Tanikawa has established a professional career encompassing solo appearances with orchestras in Europe, Asia and the United States. Ms. Tanikawa has been featured with numerous orchestras including performances with the Frankfurt State Symphony, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, among many others. Ms. Tanikawa has presented numerous solo piano recitals including performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Caramoor Performer’s Showcase Series, Villa Bertramka, and major concert halls in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, Japan.

Ms. Tanikawa is also an avid chamber musician. Her collaborations with other musicians have taken her to many cities in the US, Europe and Asia. Among others, Ms. Tanikawa has collaborated in chamber music performances with the members of the Vienna Philharmonic Wind Ensemble, as well as with the members of the Czech Philharmonic.

Ms. Tanikawa’s discography includes: Portrait from Vienna, a chamber music album of Schubert and Schumann piano quintets (Preiser records, Germany); Katsura Tanikawa plays Franz Liszt, (Art Union Records, Japan); and Beethoven Complete Works for Cello and Piano (Art Union) with renowned Viennese cellist and former cellist of the Vienna Philharmonic, Adalbert Skocic.

Ms. Tanikawa received her Bachelor of Music in Piano at The Juilliard School in New York City under the instruction of Yoheved Kaplinsky. She pursued her academic interests at Columbia University, culminating in a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History. Ms. Tanikawa received her Master of Music degree at Yale School of Music studying under Boris Berman.
