Life in the Country to Feature Guest Artist Ida Kavafian, Violin

The Hoff-Barthelson Music School Festival Orchestra performs its winter concert Life in the Country, with guest artist Ida Kavafian, violin, on Saturday, December 12, 2015, at 7:00 p.m., at the Community Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 468 Rosedale Avenue, White Plains. Jun Nakabayashi, Music Director for the Festival Orchestra, will conduct.

Included on the program are Chabrier’s Danse Villageoise from Suite Pastorale; Mozart’s lively Violin Concerto No. 4 in D Major, K, 218, with Ms. Kavafian as soloist; BartĂłk’s Hungarian Peasant Songs; and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Op. 68,”Pastoral”.

There is a suggested admission of $18 for adults. Students may attend free of charge.

About Ida Kavafian, violin
Internationally acclaimed as a violist as well as violinist, the versatile Ida Kavafian is an artist-member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and former violinist of the Beaux Arts Trio. She has been artistic director of Music from Angel Fire in New Mexico for thirty-one years. She is a founder of the Bravo! Colorado festival, serving as its artistic director for ten years and co-founded the chamber ensembles Opus One, Tashi, and Trio Valtorna. She also performs as a soloist and in recital with her sister, Ani.

Born in Istanbul of Armenian parentage, Ms. Kavafian is a graduate of the Juilliard School, where she studied with Oscar Shumsky. She made her debut under Young Concert Artists with the pianist Peter Serkin, and also received the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant. A dedicated teacher, Ms. Kavafian serves on the faculties of the Curtis Institute of Music, the Juilliard School, and the Bard College Conservatory of Music.

About the Festival Orchestra:
The Festival Orchestra is a full symphony orchestra reserved for high school students at the highest level of technical ability and musical artistry. Lauded as one of the finest high school orchestras in the United States by the New York State Council on the Arts, the Festival Orchestra presents five full symphonic concerts each year. Selected by the New York Philharmonic as a partner in its new Philharmonic Academy Jr. Program in 2014, Hoff-Barthelson is the only music school in Westchester County and the tristate area to hold this honor. Students in the Festival Orchestra benefit from this special partnership through coachings by Philharmonic members and special access to rehearsals and events.

About Jun Nakabayashi:
Music Director Jun Nakabayashi is the dynamic director of the Hoff-Barthelson Festival Orchestra and the well-regarded Taconic Opera. Active in symphonic and operatic music for the past twenty-five years, he has conducted the Bay Shore Lyric Opera, the South Bay Chamber Ensemble, Vox Artis Zenei Festival 2002 in Hungary, and the Alea II Contemporary Music Ensemble. He is committed to his work with young musicians, and has taught and conducted at the Bay Area Summer Opera Theatre Institute at San Jose State University.
