France, 1963: Anne (a fabulous Anamaria Vartolomei, Just Kids) is a bright young student with a promising future ahead of her. But when she becomes pregnant, she sees the opportunity to finish her studies and escape the constraints of her social background disappearing almost overnight. With final exams fast approaching and her belly growing, and after being refused help from doctors and her close friends, Anne resolves to go it alone, even if she has to confront shame and pain, even if she must risk going to prison to do so. This striking, urgent drama from newcomer Audrey Diwan may be set in 1963, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a more cautionary and timely film for 2022.
