In a peaceful meadow, nestled among the picturesque foothills of the southern Bavarian Alps, stands the Wieskirche. An extraordinary masterpiece of German Rococo architecture, the church was designed in the late 1740’s by Dominikus Zimmermann. Although surrounded by pastures and farms, the secluded church became an important destination for pilgrims flocking to see a holy statue which was believed to cause miracles. Exuberant and opulent, the Wieskirche is as magnificent as any city opera house. The interior, with it’s virtuoso display of frescos, carvings, stucco, light and color is truly a heavenly vision. Reverently known as ‘God’s Ballroom,’ the magnificent oval-shaped church enveloped worshipers in an otherworldly realm where sacred music of the greatest masters inspired the faithful.
