Gay Identity in Black Literature: A Kimbilio Reading and Discussion


Kimbilio Fiction and the Sarah Lawrence College MFA Writing Program present a moderated discussion on gay identity in black literature with James Hannaham, John Keene, and Dennis Norris II MFA ’12.

James Hannaham is the author of the novels Delicious Foods (2015) and God Says No (2009). He teaches in the MFA Writing Programs at the Pratt Institute and Sarah Lawrence College.

John Keene is the author of the award-winning novel Annotations; the art-poetry collection Seismosis with artist Christopher Stackhouse; and the short fiction collection Counternarratives, which has been named to “Best Fiction of 2015” lists by New York Magazine, Vanity Fair, and Flavorwire. A longtime member of the Dark Room Writers Collective and a graduate fellow of Cave Canem, he currently serves on the board of the African Poetry Book Fund, and teaches in the departments of English and African American and African Studies, which he chairs, and also is a core faculty member in the MFA Program in Creative Writing at Rutgers University-Newark.

Dennis Norris II is a graduate of Haverford College and holds an MFA in Creative Writing (Fiction) from Sarah Lawrence College. His fiction appears in Bound Off: An Online Literary Audio Magazine and Madcap Review. He has won awards and fellowships for his short fiction from the Hurston/Wright Foundation, the NYS Summer Writers Institute, VONA, and the Vermont Studio Center, and in 2015 was named a Kimbilio Fiction Fellow. He lives in Harlem and is fervently at work on his first novel.
