Chappaqua, NY- This exhibition showcases the unique vision in Joseph Squillante’s photographs. He is known throughout the region as a long-time visual chronicler and passionate advocate of the Hudson River through his photography, which many consider reminiscent of the Hudson River School of landscape painters. His new images, placed alongside his classic landscapes, imply a personal and professional evolution, a gentle bending from the traditional toward the abstract. The abstracted images are produced solely by the action of the camera not though manipulation in photoshop. In essence Capturing Images on a River of Light is the recording of a sensitive observer. In the hands of this truly gifted artist the media transcends the mundane.

“My work springs from a need to see the Hudson River in a fresh way,” says Squillante. “By considering the …underlying forms… of the subjects along the river my vision has been crystallized with a new sense of depth.”

Squillante’s iconic Hudson River photography has bred the respect of many organizations who work to preserve the integrity of the river. He has been recognized by Scenic Hudson as a “Hudson Valley Hero” and his images have inspired requests to mark milestone occasions like the American Heritage River celebration and the Quadricentennial of Henry Hudson’s journey to America in 2009.

The exhibition will run from January 23 – March 13, 2016. The library will celebrate the exhibit with a Reception on Sunday January 31 from 3 to 6pm. The artist will share the inspiration for his exhibit with a Creative Process artist talk scheduled for Sunday, March 6, 2016 at 3pm.

A Peekskill resident, Squillante grew up in the Bronx. He earned his undergraduate degree at Iona College and went on to pursue photography at the School of Visual Arts and The New School. He has studied under such luminaries as Philippe Halsman, Ralph Gibson and George Tice. In 1993 Squillante and his wife Carol Capobianco founded the Hudson River School of Photography to cultivate an appreciation for the Hudson through workshops, classroom presentations and exhibitions. His work can be found in the permanent collections at the New York Historical Society, Museum of the City of New York and the Albany Institute of History and Art.
