From Bach to Beatles

The Sanctuary Series kicks-off its third season of keyboard recitals on Sunday afternoon, February 28 at 3 pm, with a special benefit performance featuring pianist Hyperion Knight, in the elegant Fellowship Hall at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Bedford. The event will also feature Anthony Newman, Music Director at St. Matthew’s, Church performing on harpsichord.

Knight, whose all-Gershwin performance in the series last season delighted the audience, is known for his romantic touch and a diversity of repertoire from Beethoven to the Beatles, regularly appearing with orchestras across the United States and headlining at venues including Manhattan’s Rainbow Room.
Described by Wynton Marsalis as “the high priest of Bach”, and by Time Magazine as “the high priest of the harpsichord,” Anthony Newman is considered America’s leading organist, harpsichordist and Bach specialist. Newman’s wife, Mary Jane Newman, an accomplished organist and pianist, is Artistic Director for the Series.
The 2016 Spring Season, itself, consists of a series of four concerts in the Sanctuary of the South Salem Presbyterian Church beginning March 20, showcasing exceptionally talented performers, including such renowned artists as Misha and Cipa Dichter, Ani Kavafian and Eugenia Zukerman, and two of the most exciting young pianists today, Lindsay Garritson and Yun-Chin Zhou. Each performance, on Sundays at 3 PM, promises a memorable afternoon of music.
According to Mrs. Newman, a major goal of the benefit will be to help raise the remaining funds needed to acquire a concert piano. “Rather than incur the expense of bringing in a suitable instrument each season, we have taken steps to obtain a concert-caliber instrument of our own, one that can be shared with the many other groups that use the Sanctuary throughout the year,” she said. “With the help of Faust Harrison Pianos in White Plains, and Yamaha Artist Services, we have located a 9 foot Yamaha concert grand at an affordable price, ideally matched to the beautiful acoustics of our venue and the virtuosity of our performers, while remaining within our budget. We have already received pledges for more than half of the funds needed. The Sanctuary Series is a section 501(c)(3) charity making donations eligible for tax deduction,” she added. Previously, according to Mrs. Newman, the nearly new instrument was at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.
Donations for the piano can be made, and tickets for the event and the 2016 Spring Season can be purchased, by credit card or PayPal on the Series’ website or by mail.  For further information, visit www.thesanctuaryseries.org or email info@theSanctuarySeries.org.
