Film Screening : “Lush Life” with Director Robert Levi

The Museum of Arts & Culture helps kick off ArtsFest with a special screening of Billy Strayhorn: Lush Life, a 2008 award-winning documentary about the pioneering African American composer (Take the A Train), arranger and pianist. Director Robert Levi will discuss his film, which won the Emmy Award for Best Documentary of the Year, George Foster Peabody Award for Broadcast Excellence and Writers Guild Award for Best Documentary Screenplay.

The Museum of Arts & Culture will also debut an original exhibit based on the new book Strayhorn: An Illustrated Life, commemorating the life and music of Billy Strayhorn, one of the most important—yet underappreciated—contributors to 20th century American music. The book and exhibit examine his life, from his abusive upbringing and early success, to his involvement with civil rights and his living openly as a gay man in a more repressed era.
