Family Day: Follow the Line

Family Day: Follow the Line

Enjoy an afternoon of free, all-ages activities during our fall Family Day: Follow the Line. Matisse’s line will be our inspiration for artistic activities throughout the Museum.
Our Learning Center will be transformed into a portrait studio with models, mirrors, and Matisse-inspired settings. With the help of teaching artists visitors will experiment with line drawing from what they see in this special environment. Surrounded by the elegant original drawings of Henri Matisse, guests can make a sketchbook and use it to look, learn, and draw in our galleries. In our Atrium experiment with wire and other materials to create three-dimensional line drawings. And, stay tuned for a surprise pop-up station hosted by Museum Studies students from Wooster High School in Danbury, CT.
In an interactive storytelling performance at 1:30, special guest artist Jeff Hopkins will create wall-sized drawings while acting out characters and voices. In this story inspired by the exhibition Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection, a little line wonders what it takes to become as confident and bold as a line in a Matisse drawing. Does she need to be a shape? A curve? Should she be thin or thick? Maybe the answer can be found in the drawings of Ellsworth Kelly…or maybe the answer is right in front of her eyes!
