Wildlife Photography – Assateague Island & Chincoteague Parks

Irene Hinke-Sacilotto presents a wonderful visit to these areas.

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile-long narrow barrier island lying off the coast of Maryland and Virginia. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) occupies the Virginia end of the island. Like other wildlife refuges its focus is on managing critical habitats for the benefit of wildlife. Situated on the Atlantic Flyway, Chincoteague is a major resting and refueling spot for thousands of migrating birds. Chincoteague and Assateague Island are important to the preservation of disappearing coastal wetlands and undeveloped beaches. Since wildlife finds refuge locally, animals are often unusually tolerant of humans and offer excellent opportunities for photography.

For more than 35 years, Irene has shared her photographic experiences and love of nature with thousands of individuals through more than 300 photo classes, workshops, lectures, and tours in both the U.S. and abroad including Iceland, the Falkland Islands, and the Brazilian Pantanal. Program sponsors have included zoos, nature centers, camera clubs, and conservation organizations. She has written “How To” articles on nature photography for national publications such as Outdoor Photographer and her images have appeared in numerous magazines, calendars, and books. Credits include her book, “Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, an Ecological Treasure.”
