Debut: Rossini’s Italian Girl in Algiers

Written by the king of comedic opera, Gioachino Rossini, The Italian Girl in Algiers has been debuting in major opera houses throughout the world in greater numbers than ever.  Since January 2009, 48 new productions have been offered in 43 cities worldwide.  Taconic Opera is pleased to present it right here in Yorktown Heights and White Plains this coming March 2014 so that you can join other happy audience members in enjoying both its fun and beauty.  It’s “opera buffa” at its finest: .all ends well, someone is taught a lesson, and thrilling ensemble singing by the entire cast has the audience smiling and tapping their feet.  Rossini was called “The Italian Mozart” and, until his retirement in 1829, was the most popular Italian composer in history.

The Italian Girl in Algiers is the story of a group of Italians seemingly trapped as slaves to an Algerian Bey who convinces an Italian man to take his wife in exchange for some Italian woman who may be more interesting.  The newly-arrived Italian girl, combined with a generous helping of pasta, provides the prisoners with a way to make hilarious escape plans.  After a set of twists and turns, the Bey is forced to rethink what he has done and reunites with his wife.
