Debut: Rossini’s Italian Girl in Algiers

Written by the king of comedic opera, Gioachino Rossini, The Italian Girl in Algiers has been debuting in major opera houses throughout the world in greater numbers than ever.  Since January 2009, 48 new productions have been offered in 43 cities worldwide.  Taconic Opera is pleased to present it right here in Yorktown Heights and White Plains this coming March 2014 so that you can join other happy audience members in enjoying both its fun and beauty.  It’s “opera buffa” at its finest: .all ends well, someone is taught a lesson, and thrilling ensemble singing by the entire cast has the audience smiling and tapping their feet.  Rossini was called “The Italian Mozart” and, until his retirement in 1829, was the most popular Italian composer in history.

The Italian Girl in Algiers is a frothy, wacky, comic opera from its overture to the finales of both acts.  In addition to the comedy of the story line’s human predicaments, the glistening use of coloratura, the extended crescendos that build to improbable climaxes, the rapid-fire “patter” sequences, and the robust ensemble singing at the finale of every act, Rossini deliberately planned hilarity right in the music itself.

Rossini’s operas in general are full of dramatic expression that conveys the scene and mood throughout every piece of a show.  His music is both melodic and pleasing to the ear as well as complex and demanding, requiring great vocal dexterity and range of expression from singers.
