Danny Mixon

“Danny Mixon’s playing is strongly rhythmic, studded with insistent riffs, sometimes sliding into unexpected gospel settings … his playing is extremely infectious” – NYTimes

Danny Mixon was inspired by the jazz musicians that he heard at the Apollo Theatre in his youth. He studied piano with Sir Roland Hanna, played regularly with Betty Carter from ‘71-73, and recorded and played extensively with Charles Mingus in the late 70’s. Danny has worked with such legendary performers as Lionel Hampton, Joe Williams, and Frank Foster. He was a recipient along with Max Roach of the Jamaica Jazz Appreciation award and the Harlem Unsung Heroes of Afrikan Amerikan Classical Music award. Danny was honored by the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, and at the White House for Black Music Month. Danny is currently Music Director of the Lenox Lounge and an instructor at the New School. PJS welcomes Danny Mixon, “The Show Stopper!”
