DATE: Wednedsay, March 22, 2023
TIME: 6:00-7:15pm
WHERE: ArtsWestchester Gallery, 31 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains

Join us for this special Black History Month program led by award-winning historian and genealogist, Joyce Sharrock-Cole. In this interactive workshop and conversation, Sharrock-Cole will discuss some of the challenges and discoveries she made while researching her own family lineage as well as the histories of other African American and slave-owning families in Westchester. Participants will be introduced to essential genealogical research tools and methods to help start and further their own family histories.

A native of Ossining, Joyce Sharrock-Cole has a BS from Mercy College and certification as a Genealogical Researcher from Boston University. As both a historian and genealogist, Sharrock-Cole has worked with countless individuals and institutions (houses of worship, libraries, municipalities, and schools) to uncover both Black history and culture, subjects too long overlooked by the gatekeepers of history. She sits on the boards of the Westchester County Historical Society, Ossining Historic Preservation Commission, Ossining Historic Cemeteries Commission, Bethany Arts Community, and Jug Tavern.

This program is made possible with support from ArtsWestchester, New York State Council on the Arts and Westchester County Office of the County Executive and Board of Legislators.
