CULTIVATED SPACES: “to be alone with you” by Baldwin Giang

Commissioned by Copland House for its acclaimed CULTIVATE 2020 emerging composers institute, to be alone with you by Baldwin Giang takes its title from the song of the same name by the famed indie pop singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens. Giang found the lyrics of the song, about the self-sacrifices required in being alone with someone and with God, to be especially relevant during the COVID pandemic. The new piece, written for piano trio, also makes use of some of the musical material of Stevens’ song, often translating its carefully orchestrated pop production into dreamy otherworldly harmonies.

Please join Music from Copland House (hailed by The New York Times for its “bracing and beguiling … exciting and incisive” performances) for the Virtual Premiere of his dreamlike, hypnotic new work. Featured Music from Copland House artists:  Pala Garcia, violin; Alexis Pia Gerlach, cello; and Margaret Kampmeier, violin. Includes a brief introduction by the composer, and a post-performance Q&A with CULTIVATE’s Director, Grammy-nominated composer-clarinetist Derek Bermel.
