CULTIVATED SPACES: “Bloodlines” by Shuying Li

Commissioned by Copland House for its acclaimed CULTIVATE 2020 emerging composers institute, Shuying Li’s Bloodlines is an instrumental “paraphrase” of her opera of the same time. The opera depicts the shocking story of a loving couple who were both adopted from conflict zones years ago, only to discover that they are blood-related siblings. In a driving, dramatic setting, this new instrumental version freely transcribed the opera’s second scene, when the wife eventually learned about this devastating secret and fled in a panic.

Please join Music from Copland House (hailed by American Record Guide for “grand and stirring performances”) for the Virtual Premiere of this dynamic new work. Featured Music from Copland House artists:  Moran Katz, clarinet; Pala Garcia, violin; Alexis Pia Gerlach, cello; and Margaret Kampmeier, piano. Includes a brief introduction by the composer, and a post-performance Q&A with CULTIVATE’s Director, Grammy-nominated composer-clarinetist Derek Bermel.
