Craft Class on Allusion with Rachel Hadas via Zoom


ALLUSION: poetry as conversation. The late poet Rachel Wetzsteon, author of the entry on Allusion in the Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics, observes that allusion in poetry mitigates our loneliness. How does allusion work to make poetry more expansive yet intimate, inclusive and informative all at once? We’ll look at a few examples and also consider participants’ work with allusions.

Rachel Hadas is the author of many books of poetry, essays, and translations; her two most recent books, PIECE BY PIECE (selected prose) and LOVE AND DREAD (poems), were both published in the summer of 2021. The recipient of many awards, she is Board of Governors professor of English at Rutgers-Newark, where she has taught for many years.
