“Liberal Arts in Unequal Society”
America, long viewed as a beacon of equality and opportunity, is entering a new gilded age. Vast and unprecedented inequalities in wealth and income are growing, accompanied by a steep decline in social mobility. What has caused this rapid growth of inequality in the US over the last 25 years? What are its consequences for American society, culture, politics and education?
Thirteen leading experts, from such institutions as Stanford, Harvard, NYU, the University of Wisconsin, and Smith, representatives from New York City and other municipal governments, and a variety of activists will assemble at Sarah Lawrence College, known as one of the country’s most progressive institutions of higher education, for a major national conference to address these issues.
