The Right Notes: George Perle Celebration

Animated by 200 years of music, George Perle, winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in the same eventful year (1984) reached back to the music of the First and Second Viennese Schools (Franz Josef Haydn in the late 1700s and Alban Berg in the early 1900s, respectively) to create an entirely new and vibrant tonal language of exceptional grace, virtuosity, and intelligence. The Right Notes (the title of a collection of his insightful lectures and articles) places the music of those earlier Viennese masters alongside Perle’s Pulitzer-winning Woodwind Quintet No. 4 and his sextet For Piano and Winds (both featuring the beloved Dorian Wind Quintet), Triptych, and selected piano etudes. The concert features the Westchester Premieres of his Triptych for violin and piano, Sonata for Violin and Viola, and several important piano works. Leading this ear-opening tour is one of Perle’s most longstanding and acclaimed champions, Copland House’s own Michael Boriskin.

This event is part of ARTSEE, a festival showcasing new works of art throughout Westchester County in celebration of ArtsWestchester’s 50th anniversary.
