Songs America Loves to Sing

This program takes its name from 1999 Pulitzer Prize-winner John Harbison’s epic Songs America Loves to Sing, which is built upon such traditional tunes, hymns, and spirituals as Amazing Grace, We Shall Overcome, Aura Lee, Ain’t Goin’ to Study War No Mo’, and Happy Birthday. Bright Music by 1972 Pulitzer Prize-winner Ned Rorem (who recently passed his 90th birthday) is comprised of not of songs but of dances, as well as hazy images of Picasso and Chopin. And Copland House Resident and Rome Prize-winner Pierre Jalbert’s Crossings (a Copland House commission) de-constructs a French-Canadian folk song that nostalgically muses on the continental migration of Acadians south to the U.S.

This event is part of ARTSEE, a festival showcasing new works of art throughout Westchester County in celebration of ArtsWestchester’s 50th anniversary.
