Concert: “In Grateful Rejoicing — Irving Fine at 100”

Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Irving Fine (seen at the piano in photo, with Aaron Copland standing), and discover one of the greatest composers you’ve probably never heard of! Copland, writing about the music of his friend and protégé Irving Fine, raved about its “elegance, style, finish, and convincing continuity. All his compositions … have bounce and trust and finesse, and … are always a musical pleasure to hear.” This wide-ranging retrospective features the dynamic Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Eve Gigliotti singing Fine’s delectable Childhood Fables for Grown-Ups — six effervescent songs about animals set to poems by Gertrude Norman — and the internationally-acclaimed Music from Copland House ensemble performing Fine’s early, Stravinsky-inspired Violin Sonata, the darkly-intense Fantasia for String Trio, and the irrepressible Music for Piano. Fine’s daughters will be on hand to reminisce about their beloved father. Enjoy the thrill of hearing for the first time some of most lively, optimistic, and accomplished music created by an American!
