Clifton Anderson

On Friday, June 19th Roscoe’s Room welcomes trombonist Clifton Anderson. At age 7 he received his first trombone from his uncle, Sonny Rollins, and Clifton went on to join Sonny’s group in 1983 (after attending the LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and graduating from the Manhattan School of Music.) He appeared on ten of Sonny’s recordings before leaving the group in 2009 to establish himself as a leader in jazz. That year his CD “Decade” garnered critical acclaim and he was nominated Trombonist of the Year by The American Jazz Journalists Association, His most recent release, “And So We Carry On,” was voted one of the top CD releases of 2012 by Jazz Inside Magazine and reached #4 on nationwide jazz radio. In addition to his work with Rollins, Clifton has worked with an “A list” of various musical luminaries including Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Keith Richards and Slide Hampton, among others. “Easily among the top mainstream rombonists in Jazz today” says Joel Roberts of the New York City Jazz Record. “He has crafted his sound into one which both his peers and audiences clearly appreciate” adds Jazz Improv Magazine. And Jeff Nania of Metroland calls him “One of the most melodic trombonists and composers on the scene today.”
